This dessert is super simple, i can be made in 5 minutes if you use all store brought ingredients, which i did the first time i made it and an hour if you make your own custard.
If you are feeling it you can make your own doughnuts as well.
This dessert was born of a need for a dessert with what i had on hand, which at the time was some leftover cinnamin doughnuts and store brought custard. I always have cream and strawberries in my fridge so this parfait was born.
Don’t be shy with the strawberries, this is a really rich creamy dessert and the strawberries cut through all that richness.
This dessert can be made a day in advance so if you are needing dessert for a dinner party or just want to make dessert ahead for family dinner this is it.
It’s super easy to make, i made a gif of me putting it together so you can see how easy it is 🙂
For such a simple dessert this fills me with pleasure.
I have included my custard recipe but feel free to buy custard if you don’t want to or don’t have time to make it.
- 2 cups milk
- 2 cups thickened cream
- 2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste
- 8 egg yolks
- 2 tablespoons cornflour
- 2/3 cup caster sugar
- 8 cinnamon doughnuts, cut into pieces
- 250g strawberries, sliced
- Whipped cream
- salted caramel sauce
Combine milk, cream and vanilla bean paste in a small saucepan. Place over medium heat. Cook, stirring constantly, for 5 minutes or until hot (do not allow to boil). Remove saucepan from heat. Whisk egg yolks, cornflour and sugar in a heatproof bowl until well combined. Pour hot milk mixture over egg yolk mixture, whisking constantly. Return mixture to saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring constantly, for 15 to 20 minutes or until custard thickens and coats the back of a metal spoon (do not allow custard to boil, as it might curdle).
Top make the parfaits layer the doughnuts, custard, strawberries, cream then sauce in a serving glass, bowl or dish. Repeat layers as many times as you like.
Serve or place in the fridge until you need them.
